Fantasy on a theme of Arnold for Piano
Composer: Matthew Taylor
Catalogue no: QT120 | ISMN 979-0-708-08620-8
Based on one of Sir Malcolm Arnold's most haunting melodies: the theme from 'Whistle Down the Wind'. The composer describes it as a series of scenes in search of the tune, which is heard in all its glorious beauty towards the end.
Piano Solo
The"Arnold" in the title is the composer
Sir Malcolm Arnold, and the theme is taken
from his film score for "Whistle Down
The Wind". The film tells the story of a
small group of children who, on finding a
stranger hiding in the countryside, come
to believe he is Jesus Christ himself.
There is a feeling of innocence but at the
same time a certain tension between
what the children believe and what the
viewer knows. Arnold Bax's music
encapsulated this and Matthew Taylor's
Fantasy on the main theme retains both
the tension and wistful quality of the
original. An interesting piece for
Advanced students.
