TROMBONE (BC) & PIANO
This new work for trombone and piano by Timothy
Bowers was written for Blair Sinclair, then a
postgraduate student at the Royal Academy of Music and now the newly-appointed
principal trombone of the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra in Norway. The
three-movement work is contemporary in spirit but doesn't
venture far into the many extended trombonist. It is no worse for that, and
its broad feel and pacing lead to comparisons with Hindemith's
Sonata. In each of the movements Bowers creates a feeling of
expanding outwards in compass, from quiet middle-register playing to
louder dynamics at the extremes of the instrument. As you would expect with a piece
written for a postgraduate student, the technical requirements are
demanding. This is almost entirely to do with the register, which stretches
from pedal G to E an octave and a third above middle C. Add to this the
fact the piece is not short, and over the 15-minute duration the high
register is almost constantly called upon. This sort of range is a real test
for any laver and certainly rules out all but the most advanced students from attempting the work. This seems
a shame as the piece is well conceived and a genuine addition
to the repertoire.
