Three Fantasies
Composer: Sir Malcolm Arnold
Catalogue no: QT44 | ISMN 979-0-708-01545-1
A fascinating work from the end of Malcolm Arnold's composing life, written at the same time as his 9th Symphony. Opus 129.
Solo Piano
1 Lento e mesto
2 Vivace
3 Andante con moto
This month's selection opens with three short pieces by Malcolm
Arnold. Suitable for the intermediate player, all three pieces rely
quite heavily on simple two-part writing, much of which is in
contrary motion. No 1 is in slow triple time; No 2 is a much
brighter, perky number in g featuring little grace-note flourishes and
more two-part writing. The final piece returns to a slower tempo. All
are rather tame in comparison to Arnold's Buccaneer (see later in
Twentieth-Century Real Repertoire) where we find the composer in
a much more cheerful and energetic mood.
