One of the most important elements of the Simultaneous
Learning approach is the questioning that goes on between
teacher and pupil. I Love Recorder begins with this, asking the
learner to observe and report what happens when they blow.
The first musical element introduced is pulse. Pupils are
gently taken from clapping and counting to silent counting, playing
and counting in their heads. The book is careful not to include too much potentially bewildering information; and key signatures, for example, are to be saved for later books, the priority being to build a rock- solid foundation first.
Activities come in many forms, including drawing, composing, improvising and listening, all linked to the new information introduced in each stage. In the composing activities clear parameters are set, and the listening activities are very active, with clear goals, as in 'spot the mistake', for example.
The tunes are mostly by Adams, with a few thrown in from Tallis, James Rae and six-year- old Clara. Each page is clearly and attractively presented. The book comes with a CD of the piano backing tracks, from which pdfs of the piano parts can be printed off. More support is available in the form of the online teachers' notes at qtpublications.co.uk. This is an exciting new approach to a subject and instrument many of us take for granted.
Too often, young learners have not developed strong foundations for their music, and I Love Recorder is a welcome opportunity to do things differently.
Queen's Temple Publications was founded in 1995 to make available interesting and useful wind chamber music, such as Sir Malcolm Arnold's important Wind Quintet Op. 2. Since then we have expanded to include music for piano, guitar, choral music and much more. Our publications have been selected by the major examination boards worldwide.
Our composers also include James Rae, Iain Hamilton, Charles Camilleri, Paul Harris, Timothy Bowers and many others. So if you are looking for fresh and unusual new repertoire, look no further!
Queen's Temple Publications is based in the United Kingdom.
