CLARINET QUARTET, FLEXIBLE WIND ENSEMBLE
A group of students who perfected this
collection's predecessor (Riotous Ragtime and
Other Pieces) would find this book suitable to graduate to. The complexity
of the score follows a natural progression, teaching players how to handle music that becomes progressively more intricate. There are a good number of corners within the pieces that allow different players the chance to play the
principal line which in turn builds players' confidence, and creates the opportunity for teachers to talk about balance with relation to the rest of the ensemble.
A useful conglomeration of parts is provided so that ensembles can be made out of clarinets (on all four parts), flutes (in parts one and two), oboes
(in parts one and two), saxophones (part three) and bassoons (part four). In many instances teachers are faced with ensembles that do not
satisfy any logical combination of instruments, and this could still occur with this collection, despite the flexibility in these particular parts. But all is not
lost, as carefully chosen pieces from this collection will allow more accomplished string players, for example, to play the parts in C.
