FLUTE & PIANO
A small, delightful piece of about a minute and a half, Typical Arnold in style. A good encore item.
AWT
Malcolm Arnold's Solitaire is a sweet little trifle, the flute part
occupying only one page of music in largish print. Arnold's
use of 7th chords creates an atmospheric array of lush
sounds. The melody is simple but pleasing, the highest note is
top F#, and the rhythms are straightforward (no triplets).
Flautists perhaps know Arnold best through his two concertos,
but he has also written a sonata and a sonatina for flute and
piano, Fantasy for solo flute, and several small chamber
works involving flute. Arnold's musical experience is vast: he
has composed film music (The Bridge on the River Kwai won
him an Oscar), symphonies, concertos, and chamber music.
We are fortunate indeed to have this small pastiche to add
to the easier flute repertoire (it is approximately grade 3)
