Reviews

The Sonata da camera lies well for the clarinet. Written in four concise movements and using the whole range of the instruments colours and nuances, it's good for listeners and enjoyable to play.

Association of Wind Teachers magazine

Paul Harris, well known in the world of clarinetists for his enthusiasm and contributions to education, has composed this four movement work for unaccompanied clarinet. The movements are quite short and the total playing time is around 5 minutes. An Allegro agitato, Andante espressivo e rubato, Allegro molto e up this Sonata.
It is a vibrant and colourful piece, exploiting the full range of expressive qualities of the clarinet and requiring a degree of technical
skill. Rubato in the second movement gives it an improvisatory feel. This is followed by a rhythmically defined third movement. The last movement skilfully combines both elements. I estimate that this would suit a player of around grade 7-8.

Carol Taylor in Music Teacher Magazine

Paul Harris' Sonata da Camera
could be learned by a grade 8 stan-
dard player. The motifs are unmiss-
able: you don't have to live with this
biece a long time to understand how
it's held together. There are easily
graspable rhythmic patterns, and
tonal centres and structures, but not
in a traditional sense. It would make
a fascinating addition to a more tra-
ditional programme without scaring
a timid audience. Well worth a look!
